Best Student Platform Winner:

Dalma Martinovic for presentation of "Waterborne estrogens and sewage effluent inhibit competitive behavior and reproductive success in male fathead minnows." Martinovic D., Hogarth W.T. and P.W. Sorensen, Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN.

The runner-up was: Maria E. Legatt.

Best Student Poster Winner:

Nathan Eddingsaas for presentation of "Analysis of Neutral Pharmaceuticals In Environmental Water Samples Using HPLC-MS." Nathan Eddingsaas, Kim Bratton, Craig Lunte, Department of Chemistry, University of Kansas, Lawrence & University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point.

The runner-up was: O’Niell Tedrow.

$100 Travel Awards were given to several students.

January 28, 2003: We had a short course on Whole Effluent Toxicity Testing (WET).  (Schedule and speakers (pdf, 4 kb))

Dr. Deborah Swackhamer, Dr. Gerald Niemi, and Dr. Patrick Guiney were our invited speakers.  See the abstract book for details.

Dr. Swackhamer spoke on "Developing indicators of chemical stress to near shore environments of the Great Lakes."  Dr. Swackhamer is Professor of Environmental Chemistry in the Division of Environmental & Occupational Health, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.  

Dr. Niemi spoke on "Development of Environmental Indicators for the U.S. Great Lakes Coastal Region." Dr. Niemi is Professor of Biology and Director of the Center for Water and the Environment at the Natural Resources Research Institute both at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. 

Dr. Patrick Guiney gave us an update on U.S. and international screening and testing programs for environmental endocrine disruptors.   Dr. Guiney is the Manager of Product Safety & Environmental Assessment for S. C. Johnson & Son, Inc.
